Description
To install listed smoke stop assemblies on the three elevators opening into the first floor lobby's. One on the North end elevator (smoke door) by the exterior stair enclosure entry and two (Smoke Guard Systems) on the elevators located within the West side main entrance lobby, required because of the I1.1 Occupancy located on the fourth floor which negates the "B" office occupancy exception allowing main floor doors opening into a one-hour rated, fully sprinkled lobby, to not have smoke protection. Units to be installed per manufactured approved listed instructions and Structural and Fire Departments field inspectors review and approval. Maintain fire-resistive rating of shafts and corridor areas with approved fire stop systems. All per approved plans. Separate electrical permit & approval required. NOTE: Building is fully fire sprinkled.Have manufacture's approved listing and installation specifications on site for review and use by electrical, structural & fire inspectors for final approval. A letter of completion is required as evidence of inspections, finals and conformance with approved plans & attachments. drs

Met with Bob Ross of Kreizenbeck Constructors concerning question that had been raised concerning protection of elevators on the ground floor against smoke infiltration by construction of an elevator lobby or installation of additional doors at elevator openings. The building had originally been viewed as an office building, "B" occupancy which, under provisions of exception #1 to 1005.10, would not require the lobby or added doors when the lobby floor is fully sprinkled. The problem was the installation of an I1.1 occupancy on the fourth floor and another had been proposed for the third floor but the project evidently cancelled. Since the area of the "I" occupancy(s) would involve more than 10% (sec. 504.3)of the area of the floor on which it is located the facility could no longer be classified an a "B" occupancy allowing use of the exception previously noted. This had been the policy used at past mixed occupancy uses. I explained this to Bob Ross and told him I would verify this interpretation through Marlene Southard, Plan Check Manager, and provide a response to him in writing. This was done and a copy is in the builing file.
