Description
To expand an existing system into the remodeled area. The gym is an "A" occupancy and will require speaker/strobes whereas the kitchen area, wedding coordination area and the rest rooms are considered a "B" occupancy. The kitchen area consists of a roll-up door between the gym and the kitchen, smoke detectors are added for the door release. There are three (3) duct smoke detectors for HVAC shutdown in the kitchen area along with a type I hood that requires monitoring. The required manual fire alarm system includes HVAC shutdown, fire/smoke damper control, door release and notification throughout the A occupancy. The original fire alarm permit (FIR02-00070) allowed one notification appliance in the B occupancy.

The associated building permit (BLD 04-01255) is to finish a 1,366 sq. ft. area formerly noted as storage to a new commercial type kitchen, wedding coordination room, and new accessible restrooms in southwest corner of existing 30,522 sq. ft. church building per approved plans on file. Work to include a new listed 90 minute rated roll down fire door with counter in existing 2-hour rated fire wall between new kitchen and existing gymnasium, new Type I hood with grease duct and exhaust fan, grease duct wrap system, new rooftop make-up air unit, new interior walls and doors, two new accessible restrooms, two new accessible showers, interior finish, new suspended ceiling in kitchen, fire sprinkler and alarm work, mechanical work, plumbing work, and electrical work. This remodel is occurring in an area of the building that is Type V-A construction with sprinklers for one-hour substitution. This is a Scope of Work Permit. I stopped at the project to discuss with the project manager, Cameron, about the non use of the gymnasium (FIR02-00070). After looking around I found that work is being done in the kitchen area. This work has been permitted through a BLD. But the fire alarm that has been installed in the kitchen and gymnasium areas has not been permitted yet. The work I observed is conduit and wiring to the speaker/strobes in the gym. Wire to a duct detector on zone 6 and fire alarm wiring to the type 1 hood suppression system. Per Rand with Alarm Star he is not the installing contractor. He is unsure who the installing electrician is since they are being hired through the general contractor. Rand did state that Lynn Proctor Electric, in Caldwell, is the onsite electrician and may be the responsible party. I told both Rand and Cameron that all work on the fire alarm system is to stop until approved plans are on site. I contacted Mary in plan review about this issue.
