Description
The Fire Sprinkler Scope of work consists of changing the existing sprinklers system to accommodate the new wall and ceiling layout. Extended cover sprinklers are being utilized with spacing of 16’x16’,K=14. A new backflow preventer is being added. There is an antifreeze system for the NE corner loading dock on the first level. All existing sprinklers are being removed. New sprinklers are being added via mechanical tees. Construction is non-combustible steel. The system is a grid 4”x4”x1½” on each level.


Building Department Scope:

KOHL'S DEPARTMENT STORE T.I.- Remodel of a two level, 83,730 sq. ft. (41,741 sq. ft. 1st level / 41,989 sq. ft. 2nd level) mercantile occupancy building, for continued same occupancy use by Kohl's. Kohl's will be an anchor store and is part of the unlimited area BTS Mall. The building is fully sprinklered. Work includes select interior demolition; modification and rebuild of all entry doors; non-combustible metal walls and drywall to create storage room areas, new His & Hers accessible restrooms, office and support areas, training and conference rooms; interior finishes, SAT, shelving, customer dressing rooms; new lighting fixturing, HVAC and plumbing; structural modifications at floor area at new escalator location and for new RTU’s. NOTE: modification to fire sprinkler and or the alarm system cannot be made until a separate permit is issued by the Fire Dept. drs

Todays inspection was to verify that several of the previous corrections had been addressed on the lower level. They have been marked "ok" in red ink. One pendant still had not been installed in a hard lid and the earthquake bracing for the mains was incorrect.

The open sales area of the lower level is ok to cover except for locations where earthquake bracing is required to be verified. None of the smaller, outer rooms, have been inspected for cover. Several locations on the sales floor require modified sprinkler coverage. There is atleast one concealed space with no sprinkler protection but with exposed wood. Also the 2 1/2" branchlines in the lower and upper level areas require lateral earthquake bracing.

The majority of the area looked at this afternoon was the Upper Level. There are still several outstanding items which include missing retaining straps, overspaced heads, missing heads, need for trapeze hangers in the warehouse and possible obstructions caused by the valances in the display areas. The piping arrangement does not match the plans so plan modifications will be required prior to a final sign off. The lower level truck dock dry system was inspected today as well. Revised hydraulic calculations were submitted and approved by Tim Frost for this area. I need verification that the top beam clamps have been welded to the beam flange or new hangers installed. Tim Frost noted a Trash Compactor area which is lacking sprinkler protection.

Only a small area of the second floor near the escalator is ok for cover. The other areas do not have the T-bar or the pendant heads installed. I let Joe know that what appears to be soffits at the outer edge of the sales floor may cause obstructions to the sprinkler coverage when installed.

Performed partial inspection on the second floor. Inspected sales permitter. Did not inspect rooom on the outside sales area. Did not inspect the middle of the sales. Prints are marked in red for sprinklers that were inspected. Inspection, failed. There were over spaced and missing sprinklers. The prints are marked accordingly.
