Description	(LINEN BUILDING RENOVATION) This building will be fire sprinklered for story increase. To renovate an existing 2 story with basement building (2,632 square foot basement, 4,133 square foot 1st story, 670 square foot 1st story mezzanine, 4,133 square foot 2nd story) in anticipation of future restaurant, restaurant kitchen, office, and storage uses. Work is to include interior stairways; two 1-hr stairway shafts to serve the basement; 2 restrooms accessible to the disabled; an elevator to serve the 2nd story; a 1-hr elevator shaft; a 1-hr elevator machine room; interior nonbearing walls; exterior concrete steps, landings, and ramps; new roof insulation on top of the roof sheathing; new single ply roof membrane; new fixed awnings; and a seismic upgrade. Onsite meeting with Building and Fire department personnel to evaluate the current building protection status with respect to an occupancy event scheduled for noon today, discovered by the fire inspector at his initial check of the sprinkler hydro test this morning. No sprinkler contractor was on site, no sprinkler plans were available, but the system is currently shut off (isolated from the city supply, as a hydrostatic test is underway); sprinkler heads were noted missing in both basement stairways; it appears the wrong temperature heads may have been installed (high temperature heads were noted in the basement and first floor areas). The fire alarm system was out of service and the off-site monitoring phone connections were being installed at the time of this visit, several other deficiencies were noted including lack of the manual pull station, no monitoring point for the main sprinkler control valve. Exit signs and emergency lites were in service, exit hardware was satisfactory on the two 1st floor exit doors; signs were posted to indicate no public entry allowed to the basement and 2nd floor areas, although construction workers were intermittently in those areas; handrails on the front entrance were deficient. The building official required the front entry to be constantly manned with persons to assist as needed, as a temporary option for handrails. The fire marshal required a fire watch and an engine company to remain onsite during the event.
