RE: Letter dated May 15th 2009 in response to Troy James Plan review.

Response to Items #1 and #2 re nail painting exhaust May 15th 2009:

Thank you for designing and providing mechanical plans with your architects stamp. Although not normally accepted in lieu of engineered drawings when required by this office in accordance with IMC section 102.9 and under the authority provided in said section and in accordance with IMC section 103. and 103.2 as the code official I will grant an exception for this one job with the following conditions of approval.

A. At the time of rough-in installation and inspection when the 4" duct length and number of 90 degree elbows is known provide a third party engineered static pressure calc on said 4" exhaust duct system indicating that the fan used (static pressure production) minus the ductwork static pressure drop or losses will remove the required design cfms at the point(s) of use.
B. Be prepared to advice your client that if this design is inadequate a new design requiring larger ducting and fan will be required or a much more expensive 4 inch exhaust fan capable of a high enough static pressure to meet design exhaust requirements will be required to be installed.

Response to Item #3 re dryer exhaust May 15th 2009:

Please be advised that the dryer exhaust duct requirements of IMC section 504.6 and 504.6.1 are prescriptive requirements and take precedence when designing dryer exhaust systems. The exception should only be used when architectural design and location of dryers is determined to be unavoidable to accommodation of the prescriptive requirements of this section. The exception as per code language will only be granted if necessary and the make, model and installation instructions for a compliant dryer are provided to the code official to meet the exception requirement. Also, we know that stack type apartment style dryer units have historically had lower fan exhaust length limitations. Wall labeling is required in some jurisdictions for future owner reference. Please advice your client and installers accordingly.

Thanks you, Lee Rice, Mechanical Code Official.

1. Nail salons are required to be designed and wet stamped by a Mechanical Engineer. I informed this to you over the phone.
2. Provide more information about exhaust fan. I am currently assuming it is an inline fan. What is its cfm capabililty? Can it handle the amount of duct and elbows as shown on plans to exit at roof?
3. Provide with plans dryer manufacturer allowable duct length. If this cannot be obtained at this time, please note on plans dyer specs will be required on site for Mechanical Inspector to review.

1. Ventilation requirements for nail salons per IMC Table 403.3, footnote b, states that there shall be no recirculation of air in the space. The intent of the IMC is that the exhaust system shall be at point of service. Please revise plans to show the exhaust system design to show exhaust ducting down at each manicure station.
2. Please show on plans make up air design for the exhaust system at manicure stations in addition to required ventilation as shown on plans.
3. Provide section view on plans of exhaust system design at manicure stations.
4. Provide on plans location of supply and return diffusers.

5. Note on plans how the exhaust system for manicure station will be interlocked, so as to function during business hours.
