Phone Call with Bob Sommers Senior Engineer for Sherwin Williams

Explained the following to him:
- FM Data Sheet 8-30 requires a .30/3000 + 500 hose.
- IFC does not define roll carpet storage however, Rugs, foam backed is defined as a Class IV commodity.
- Class IV commodity defined in NFPA 13 for a rack up to 12' is Extra Hazard Group I which is a .30/2500 + 500 hose. Which corresponds to FM criteria.
- Since there is no exact criteria for roll carpet storage in the IFC I will apply IFC 102.7 and use FM Data Sheets.
- The existing system is calculated for a .20/1500 + 250 based upon a letter provided by Treasure Valley Fire Protection
- He asked what it was he needed to do. I said, Hire a fire protection contractor to evaluate the existing sprinkler system and determine what changes are required to achieve .30/3000 + 500 density.

Bob told me the following:
- The drawing is wrong it is not a warehouse even though the drawing is labeled 'Warehous Area" he says it is a store. Since it is a store he wants to treat it as Mercantile.
- The drawing is wrong there is no paint storage even though there is an elevation defining "Warehouse Paint Rack Elevation"
- The drawing is wrong there is no pallet rack even though the drawing indicates "Pallet Racks"
- The drawing is wrong the roll carpet storage will not exceed 12'
- The drawing is wrong there is no "Handstack Rack"

Conclusion:
There is no basis to detemine that this is a mercantile occupancy other then Bob saying "This is what we have always done in the past." Even if it was mercantile IFC: 903.2.6.1 would then pertain which sends you back to racks which sends you to .30/2500 + 500 hose

Follow Up:
I briefed Mark Senteno on the above phone conversation.
