Rusty – I don’t believe I responded directly to the issue described below of whether free movement of the couplers is critical to the system.

It is my opinion that the use of a foam disk (or other form of compressible material) at the ends of the couplers will not materially affect the performance of the repair. If the disks are not used, the couplers will act like intermediate stressing anchors (which is a common approach used in new construction).

Subject: PT repair status

Hi Kent,

We successfully tensioned all re-coupled PT strands this morning without any difficulty. The above photos show the basic staggered orientation of the banded strands and the final orientation after tensioning. We achieved ~4700 psi (to result in 24.5 kips effective load) on each strand. Elongation varied from about 8 inches to a little over 10 inches (no more than 7% elongation).

Because the strands sit so close to each other the plastic conduit encasement could not be used. So we propose to wrap the strands together in a single ensheathment using grease tape. This is the standard practice recommended by Vector and others and specified in PTI DC80.3-12/ICRI 320.6 section 4.5.7.1.4 Sheathing Repair. The emphasis seems to be corrosion resistance and not movement of the strands after embedment in new concrete. If free movement is critical to the system, we can include a compressible material (foam disk) at the ends of the couplers prior to tape wrap to allow the couplers to move back and forth a bit parallel to the cable.

Please reply with any concerns/comments/ideas. We can complete the repairs as soon as tomorrow.

Thank you,
Rusty Boicourt, P.G.

Sam – it looks like my involvement is done with this one. Although I never provided you with any formal review comments (the repairs moved faster than my paperwork), I can tell you that in the discussions I had with both Rusty and Greg last Friday I was able to outline my primary concerns:

1. The engineer (Greg) should get the recommended stressing loads from the PT supplier
2. The splice chuck locations should allow free movement of the chucks during the stressing operation
3. The procedures should require the inspector to document the applied jacking force and elongations

In the end, it looks like each of my concerns were addressed. While I do not have access to all of the design information, in general my sense is the final repair will allow for safe use of the structure with only a moderate reduction in overall capacity.
