Commercial Cooking:
Type 1 hoods shall be protected with an approved automatic fire-extinguishing system, designed, installed and tested in accordance with IFC Section 904 and NFPA 17A.

NOTE : A separate Cooking Hood Fire Extinguishing System permit is required to install and test such systems. (IFC 610 and 904.2.1)

Where a building fire alarm system is installed, automatic fire-extinguishing systems shall be monitored by the building fire alarm system in accordance with NFPA 72 (IFC 904.3.5).

System interconnection. The actuation of the fire suppression system shall automatically shut down the fuel or electrical power supply to the cooking equipment. The fuel and electrical supply reset shall be manual. Electrical equipment that shuts down upon extinguishing system activation shall include but not be limited to receptacles, outlets, lights, switches, wire, and junction boxes, etc. The status of the exhaust fan shall be as specified by any special listing requirements of the hood, fan, and/or extinguishing system. However, in no case shall switches or connections for a fan that is to continue to run upon extinguishing system activation be allowed under the hood. (IFC 904.11)

A manual actuation device shall be located at or near a means of egress from the cooking area a minimum of 10 feet and a maximum of 20 feet from the kitchen exhaust system. The manual actuation device shall be installed not more than 48 inches nor less than 42 inches above the floor and shall clearly identify the hazard protected. The manual actuation shall require a maximum force of 40 pounds and a maximum movement of 14 inches to actuate the fire suppression system. (IFC 904.11.1)

A portable fire extinguisher shall be provided within 30-ft travel distance of commercial-type cooking equipment. Cooking equipment involving vegetable or animal oils and fats shall be protected by a Class K rated portable extinguisher. (IFC 904.11.5)

NOTE: Final approval will be subject to satisfactory field inspection by the PDS Fire inspector.
