Telephone call  10/24/1996
Phone call to Bob Hess, 8:28 A.M. to inform him that Tim Hogland, Building Dept. Director, had approved his request to allow the existing 1/2" sheetrock to be left in the corridor as per Appendix Section 111(c), 1991 UBC.
Plan Reviewer's activity  10/24/1996
I received a letter from Bob Hess of CTA Architects Engineers in behalf of Trinity Fellowship Church. It was address to Tim Hogland in care of Dan Stuart. The letter ask that Tim Hogland, as the Building Dept. Dir., consider the acceptance of 1/2" sheetrock in an existing corridor (sheetrock in good condition) toremain and be acceptable under the conditions outlined in Appendix Chapter 1, Div.1, 1991 UBC (code year under which the phased code upgrade project was permited- Bld95-0152), Sec. 111(c) that allows acceptance at the discretion of the "Building Department Director" per Building Code Amendment 4-2-34 (Ord. 5376, 03-10-92). Tim approved the request by signing the bottom of the letter with his signature and O.K. I called Bob Hess with this information and FAXED him a copy of the approved letter with Tim Hoglands signature. I also gave a copy of the letter to Jim Storey, structural inspector for the project at this time. drs
Meeting  10/22/1996
Met with Bob Hess, CTA Architects. In working on the upgrade of the occupancy separation wall it was discovered that some areas of the existing corridor have 1/2 inch sheetrock on the walls and ceiling while other areas have 5/8 inch sheetrock per Bob's measurement during the original evaluation. Bob said the existing sheetrock is in good condition. We reviewed what the requirements were for corridors in the 1995 UBC, the code year that would have been in force at the time of the construction. Table B in Ch. 47 indicated 2 layers of 1/2" sheetrock on each side of stud walls and two layers of 1/2" inch on the ceiling with a 1" hat channel type spacer between the layers per an assembly in Ch 47 Tbl C. The plans for the code upgrade were reviewed during the 1991 code adoption. Appendix Chapter 1, Sec. 111(c) of the 1991 UBC allows 1/2" sheetrock sheetrock in good condition to be left in the rated corridors when approved. This approval is given by the Building Department Director per Building Code Amendment 4-2-34, Ord. 5376, 03-10-92. I gave a copy of these sections to Bob Hess as well as referencing him to Chapter 34 of the now adopted 1994 UBC for Existing Buildings which require alterations, modifications or repairs to be done to meet current code but does not require additional upgrades to areas not part of the new work if no unsafe conditions are created by the new work. Bob Hess is to formulate a letter explaining what was found during the current remodel, how they intend to correct the problems effected by the remodel, items being corrected within the existing corridors per previous letter of agreement on file and request of Mr. Hogland, Building Department Director, that the areas with existing 1/2" sheetrock be allowed to remain "as is" under the afore mentioned sections & amendments. At future projects, corrections will be made to those areas that are a part of the project to meet the code in effect when the project is permitted.
