Description
To replace an existing fire alarm system. The required manual fire alarm system includes sprinkler monitoring, elevator recall/shutdown, required automatic detection, HVAC shutdown, fire/smoke damper control, door release and notification throughout. The smoke control system as required per IFC 907.2.13 has not been implemented at this time. The required smoke detectors are to be installed and a general alarm shall be initiated on receipt of a single smoke detector. A voice/evac notification system is required per IFC 907.2.13.2.

The freight elevator located on the west side of the building is not for personnel and does not have recall controls. Nor do they plan on upgrading in the near future, so there are no fire alarm system components shown on the design that are associated with this elevator.

2/27/2006 - Plan Modification. A single cooking hood is indicated in the Café Ole suite B-120 (basement). The 75 cd S/S has been relocated to the east wall, creating insufficient visual coverage east of the walk-in cooler. Provide additional strobe coverage for this space.

The NAC circuits have changed, so the PDS Fire Inspector to compare and field verify all EOLs to the values on the riser.

The FACP and the NAC panels have been relocated, allowing the installer to delete four smoke detectors (used for panel protection). The new location is near the elevator, it appears that the elevator recall smoke detector will be utilized for the panel protection. See comment #11 for smoke detector coverage for the atrium.

The associated building permit (BLD 03-02412) is to remodel areas located in the basement and on the 1st and 2nd floors of a building located in "The 8th Street Market Place" and addressed as 404 S. 8th Street. Selective demolition is also covered under this permit. Work is to include new core restrooms in the basement and on the 2nd floor, a wheelchair lift, a new 8th Street entrance, new Broad Street entrances, exterior wall finishes for the North wall, new elevated concrete terrace, and an expanded roof structure all per the approved drawings and the plan review report on file. The location of fire sprinkler heads shall comply with NFPA 13-1999 as regulated by the Fire Department. DRH03-00064 (12-8-03) A COPY OF A LICENSE AGREEMENT WITH ACHD ALLOWING DOORS TO SWING INTO THE PUBLIC WAY SHALL BE SUBMITTED TO THE BUILDING DEPARTMENT BEFORE THIS PERMIT IS FINALED. **CJW** 8TH STREET MARKETPLACE - BUILDING 404 - BASEMENT/1ST/2ND FLOORS) (2-24-05) PLAN MODIFICATION TO DEMOLISH A 400 SQUARE FOOT 1 STORY WITH BASEMENT PORTION OF THIS BUILDING LOCATED NEXT TO THE ALLEY TO CREATE AN AREA FOR TRANSFORMERS TO SERVE THE NEW HOTEL BUILDING THAT WILL BE LOCATED ACCROSS THE ALLEY. This building is fire sprinklered to substitute for 1-hr fire-resistance rated construction.

telcon and email with Rich Lewis, Rolf Jensen Associates (###-####) regarding spacing requirements for smoke detectors in the corridor having open ceiling joists over 12" deep. I agreed to consider using the 2007 ed of NFPA 72 as an alternate design for this particular situation.
Telephone call  1/19/2007 DONE
Telcon from Rich Lewis, Rolf Jensen, Walnut Creek ###-####, to discuss smoke detector requirements for ceilings of open solid joists more than 12" deep. I referenced NFPA 72, 5.7.3.2.4 (B)(2). We agree that paragraph applied but he was looking for "a more reasonable approach". I indicated we must follow prescribed code or an approved alternate design stamped by a professional engineer adn that we are willing to consider such an engineered alternate design as prescribed by the IFC, using a second engineer of our choice to verify the proposed design, to be paid for by the owner. He indicated he would suggest that alternative to the general contractor who he was working for.

Tested all duct detectors today, one detector(device 30) in the basement failed to function, one detector on the 2nd floor will need to be relocated as it is upstream of a return grill, need to change descriptor of one detector location at the cafe ole office area. Noted that the SD's located adjacent to the atrium in several locations will not function as installed due to open ceiling beam obstructions greater than 12" in depth.

Work in progress.
Miscellaneous action  6/1/2006 DONE
Called Charlie to notify of the required 3 hour fire separation (no smoke requried) between the two buildings and inform him that the smoke detectors for the atruim coverage are mounted on open beam ceilings (6 areas) and believe the beams to be 12" or greater, which means improper smoke detector coverage.
