1. Plans are incomplete. This facility is incorporating a Class I, Manual Combination, Wet Standpipe System.
a. Standpipe system calculations are required at a minimum residual pressure of 100 psi at the outlet of the hydraulically most remote 2½" hose connection flowing 500-gpm (250 gpm at the two hydraulically most remote hose connections on the standpipe) and 250-gpm for the other stairs (this building) with the calculation procedures in accordance with 7.10.1.2.
i. Branch lines shall be sized based on the hydraulic criteria established in Section 7.8 and Section 7.10 but not less than 2½".
ii. Where a standpipe system is provided with a fire department connection, the authority having jurisdiction shall be consulted regarding the water supply available from a fire department pumper per 7.7.4. Fire department pumper information at the point of connection shall be obtained from the Fire Marshal by contacting Jerry Prinzing @ ###-####.
iii. Address and provide a sign which indicates the pressure required at the inlets to deliver the (standpipe) system demand at a minimum residual pressure of 100 psi at the outlet of the hydraulically most remote 2½" hose connection flowing 500-gpm (250 gpm at the two hydraulically most remote hose connections on the standpipe) and 250-gpm for the other stairs with the calculation procedures in accordance with 7.10.1.2.
(NFPA 14-7.8, 7.10, 6.3.5.2.2)
March 23, 2005 - Calculations are flawed. NFPA 14-7.10.1.2* Hydraulic Calculation Procedure. Review your calculations and include correct locations of hoses flowing, etc. Your calculations also show node 22 as a hose flowing?
7.10.1.2.1 Hydraulic calculations and pipe sizes for each standpipe shall be based on providing 250 gpm at the two hydraulically most remote hose connections on the standpipe and at the topmost outlet of each of the other standpipes at the minimum residual pressure required by Section 7.8.
Revise and resubmit correct calculations for system design verification.
Sign requirements are addressed in the code and anything less than what is addressed in the code is to be approved by the acting Fire Marshal or the Fire Chief, (in written approval). Signage requirements are also addressed in items #39, 53, 101 below.
NOTE: Fire Department pumper water supply shall be designed to include a 150 psi @ 1,500 gpm and no more, (unless approval is provided in writing from the Fire Chief).

2. Regarding earthquaking, provide supports restraints above the lowest level where flexible fittings are used. Revise and resubmit corrected plans. Supports above the lowest level shall also restrain the pipe to prevent movement by an upward thrust where flexible fittings are used. (NFPA 13:9.2.5.3.2, BMC 7-01-50-901.2, IFC 105.4.2)
March 23, 2005 - Not provided. Include this requirement on the plans.

3. Backflow prevention is not provided or addressed with required forward flow components/provisions. Provide/address forward flow provisions test and appurtenance in accordance with NFPA 13-8.16.4.6.1*. (BMC 7-01-50-901.2, IFC 105.4.2)
March 23, 2005 - Unacceptable configuration. Your system design will require the following process:
a. Deactivation shutdown,
b. Draining,
c. Pipe installation,
d. Flow testing,
e. Shutdown,
f. Draining,
g. Removal of pipe,
h. Reactivation.
Provide a configuration of piping and appurtenance that will not require system/s shutdown for required forward flow testing of backflows, thus eliminating requirements and policing of IFC 901.7.
