Description
Scope of Work: Revised 3/28/2008 - There is an upgrade agreement on file, established under BLD05-00127, for installation of a fire suppression (sprinkler) system in the areas immediately behind the main office, labeled on the upgrade agreement plan as 'Warehouse #1' and 'North Loading Dock'. This sprinkler permit (FIR07-00929) is being issued for this required sprinkler work. The 'Office' area is not required to be sprinklered. The associated building permit BLD07-01957 (as modified 3/3/2008) includes the construction of a 135 sq. ft. room in the northwest corner of the existing warehouse for use as a fire sprinkler riser room. (Underground) A new 8" C-900 underground service will be run out 120'-0" from the property line at the North West corner of the Warehouse #1 structure. The underground will be controlled from a new post-indicating valve. The FDC will also be remote of the building, per plans. (Overhead) Two dry pipe & valve / risers will serve through out the warehouse and loading dock. A 1.5" hose valve system will also be installed in the warehouse.
The fire sprinkler system work shall comply with the IFC 2003 and the attached review comments. The approved plans, review comments, permit and fire "Inspection Card" are required to be on site. This permit is attached to building permit: BLD07-01957. ****3/28/2008 Per Sam Rogers, a1,000 sq ft remote area was required to be calculated using a 0.40 density, to prove the system is adequate for an EH2 occupancy for Group A plastics, consisting of couches in wooden crates to be stored along the north & east exterior walls up to 7'-6" high. The total area of couch storage amounts to just under 1,000 sf, which is less than 10% of building space and is therefore treated as Miscellaneous Storage. NO RACK STORAGE IS ALLOWED UNDER THIS PERMIT. SLR

Need the pallets that have been placed on top of the couch storage boxes removed. I let the warehouse manager know that no items can be stored there. The PIV tamper switch needs adjusted so that it reports correctly. The forward flush passed. The trip tests of the two dry systems passed.

Modified plans reviewed by T. Coobley. New calc's acceptable. Plan annotations have been revised to stipulate the design commodities includes Plastics (couches) in wood crates less than 8' in height, not exceeding 1,000 sf; which is less than 10% of building, therefore classified as Miscellaneous Storage. Resubmitted hydraulic calculations based on the currently issued plans, verify the required EH2 density of 0.40gpm/sf/ over 1,000sf (the max. area of storage) is available without a fire pump. Therefore the currently issued sprinkler layout with no fire pump, based on Class IV piled commodities, with NO RACK STORAGE, is also acceptable for limited storage (not exceeding 1,000 sf) of Plastic commodity (couches in wooden crates) stored less than 8' in height. The overhead rough-in as far as piping installation is passed. The wrong heads have been installed. The correct sprinkler heads need to be installed or approval from the plan reviewer is required if they are to be left. The hose valves/piping as shown on the city approved plans has been removed as per Dave Hanniman.

Telcon today with Randy Bowran, DeBest Fire Protection, ###-####, in follow up to our 3/23/08 telcon. Randy indicated the commodities include couches covered with a plastic bag, two-high, within in wooden 5-sided crates, (i.e. open on one side), with no plastic wrap or encapsulation around the wooden crate. I indicated that commodity falls under the "Plastic" commodity classification, per NFPA 13, TABLE A.5.6.4.1 ("Furniture-wood-with foam plastic cushioning"", not under the Class IV commodity class specified in their design criteria. Randy indicated the owner has agreed to remove all existing racks, and to store all couches in crates as described, along the north and east exterior walls, one crate high (7feet, each crate has an interior shelf so two couched are stored in each crate), and the total floor area occupied would be somewhat less than 1,000 sf. That arrangement would allow this Plastic storage to be considered as Miscellaneous storage, subject to NFPA 13, Chapter 13,;and Table 13.2.1 requires EH2 density of 0.40 gpm/sf/2500 sf. not considering the dry system adjustment. Randy agreed to recalculate the sprinkler system hydraulic performance over the specific floor area of the proposed couch storage to determine what density the system can provide. Randy will advise us of the calculation results and we will then decide whether the protection will be adequate as designed or if other protection measures will be required.
The permit shall not be "finaled" until this issue has been satisfactorily resolved.

Per the fire alarm plans, there is no fire pump or pump room. I called Randy at DeBest (###-####) and learned that the design for the sprinkler FIR07-00929 permit is based on eliminating the fire pump (which was shown on FIR07-00374) at the request of the owner who told them he would eliminate rack storage and go to solid piled storage. I requested that we visit the site to verify that the owner intends to do that and if he has eliminated the racks yet. We do not want to approve the design/installation of a sprinkler design designed for solid piled storage unless they are willing to first eliminate the existing rack storage. He will set up an appointment for us to visit. Meantime, we are holding off on the approval of the fire alarm permit FIR08-00122.
