Description
The Fire Sprinkler Scope of work consists of adding fire protection to three existing buildings that are joined together to form one facility. There is no associated building permit at this time. There will be two gridded systems for high pile storage and one system for the offices and storage rooms below a mezzanine. The systems will be supplied through new 6” Udg and backflow preventer. The system is designed for Class I storage. The commodity is beer in glass and cans in cardboard boxes.

Plan Mod Scope:

Numerous revisions required due to field inspector final inspection. Changes included - main sizes, additional fittings, end sprinkler spacing, revised hydraulics, new hydraulics, upright protection added in combustible concealed area and combustible concealed spaces filled with non-combustible insulation. This review is for plan mod changes only.

Fire Protection Contractor Notice:

The building permit has not been issued at this time. The building department may determine that changes are required to the building plans in order to meet code. These changes may affect the sprinkler system. The sprinkler contractor will be required to make all necessary changes that may be required. Therefore, if the sprinkler contractor chooses to proceed without an issued building permit they will do so on their own cognizance.

Forrest France worked Thursday 11/11/10 to perform hydro tests on the new sprinkler systems. This inspection has not been logged in under a separate inspection due to the plan status being in the Rev status due to an additional resubmittal for plan modifications. Forrest found that systems #1, #2 and #3 had been pumped up but the system header and FDC piping had not. The fitter stated that these items would be tested the following day. Forrest started the two hour testing and upon his return found that a mechanical tee had failed under pressure on system #2. So on 11/11/10 systems #1 and #3 passed hydro.

Todays (11/12/10) hydro test was for the header and FDC piping. System #2 had not been set back up for testing. After starting the hydro testing Bill and I started the inspection to verify the corrected items on the latest plan modifications. Everything was completed except 14 sprinkler heads along the south wall did not get relocated as required on the plan modifications and two upright heads were still exceeding their half spacing in the upper level Storage Room. So a total of 16 sprinkler heads needed to be relocated. The other correction items including the installation of insulation in the joist channels had been completed. Due to the 16 heads needing relocated, the sprinkler systems where these heads are located, will need to be re-hydro tested. At this point it was agreed to end the header and FDC hydro test and go ahead and perform the forward flow verification for the backflow preventor which passed easily out of a single 2 1/2" outlet. In conclusion to finish this sprinkler permit, the 16 relocated heads need to be finished, hydro testing performed and the verification of fire alarm interconnections.

Called Randy Bowron and told him that I was denying the plan. The hydraulic calculations did not match the actual installation and there were density issues in remote area 5.

Todays inspection was actually just an underground flush which passed inspection. This project is not ready for a final inspection at this time. See previous correction items noted.

Plans need to be resubmitted showing all piping changes and additional sprinkler heads. Revised hydraulic calculations are required showing the routing changes and additional fitting added due to structural members. Resubmittals were required per the approved plans if additional fittings or piping were provided. See the city approved plans for locations of deficiencies as marked in red. Two items not marked on the plans but discussed with Bill were the clearance for the main penatrations through the block walls and a letter from a structural engineer or manufacturer addressing/approving the drilling of the structural members to mount the siesmic bracing.

Bill and I went over earthquake bracing. I told him if the earthquaking did not match plans then resubmittals of the seismic calculations would be required. We also talked about possible z-purlin manufacture approval for earthquake attachment.
