Research regarding the Elevator fireman's hat light functions: Since 1983, the lobby smoke detectors are required to illuminate the hat light in the elevator (i.e. solid). As of the 2006 NFPA 72, the lobby detectors are still required to illuminate the hat light, but then the elevator machine room smoke detector and elevator shaft smoke detector (if allowed) are to cause a distinct signal (i.e. flashing hat light) to notify the occupants and responding crews of the danger. The elevator in question was installed in 1993, therefore, only the solid light requirement was enforced for lobby smoke detectors. It is recommended that the elevator machine room smoke and the elevator shaft smoke (if there is one) should also illuminate the hat light, but there is not a code requirement for that function prior to 1996.

The only item tested and passed was the smoke detector located in the elevator machine room. The heat detectors did not shunt. The test was stopped at this point. No other items were tested.
