Curtis with Simplexgrinell called regarding smoke detector placement for door holder release. He stated that there is an air defuser located right by the door and wanted to know if the smoke detector could be offset from the centerline of the door. I told him code requires the detector to be on the center line, but reminded him that since the corridors have smoke detectors with normal corridor spacing that the smoke detector in question did not have to be within 5' of the door, so that should give him enough room to mount the detector at least 3' from the diffuser and still maintain the center line rule.

Curtis with Simplexgrinnell called. He wanted to know if he could just provide as-built drawings to change the new door holders from the relay modules as submitted to instead tie them in to the existing door holder circuit. I told him he would need to submit a plan modification but to verify the doors are not part of a smoke control system and/or intended to close upon smoke detection in that corridor. If they are, then they can not change them to the existing door holder circuit (i.e. release on general alarm) because they would have to be released locally (i.e. smoke detector within 5' of the door).

Curtis w/ Simplexgrinnell called back to let me know they are leaving things as submitted. He asked as a 'side note' if the could shut both sets of doors (one set at each end of the corridor) using one set of smoke detectors. I pointed him to 2010 NFPA 72 17.7.5.6.5.3 where it states that if the separation between doorways exceeds 24", each doorway shall be treated separately (i.e. one set of smoke detectors can not release both sets of doors).
