This quick permit is to relocate two existing speaker/strobes and add two new strobe only devices to accomodate a tenant remodel. Approval is subject to field measurement of the EOL voltage drop. For appliances with an operating voltage range of 16V – 33V, the minimum acceptable voltage is 19.6V with the AC power off. Any measurement below this voltage will be considered insufficient to run the NACs at the end of useful battery life of 20.4V (per UL 864, Standard for Control Units for Fire Signaling Systems). See NFPA 72 2010 Handbook 18.3.2.3 for further assistance with calculations. The installing contractor shall have available at final inspection a voltage meter and measure end of line voltages; witnessed by the field inspector. Wall-mounted visual notification appliances shall be mounted such that the entire lens is not less than 80 inches and not greater than 96 inches above the finished floor or at the mounting height specified using the performance-based alternative of 18.5.4.5. 2010 NFPA 72 18.5.4.1.

Spoke to Charlie at Simplexgrinnell to go over the resubmitted quick permit plans. I explained that by relocating an existing device from the crew room area to the Quiet Room, portions of the Crew Room were left without adequate visual coverage. I let him know I would need to reject the plans because regardless of how they decide to approach providing additional coverage new battery calculations and voltage drops would be required. He said he understood. I let him know a copy of the redlined plans would be available at the permit desk for him to pick up.

Dante with Simplexgrinnell called. He said they ran the calculations and the circuit they show the new device added to is maxed out and will not accomodate the device as submitted. I explained I would need to fail the permit. He said he should have the new documentation to me next week after their technician is back from vacation and can go to the site and survey the actual current draws/speaker circuit watts etc...
