Informed by Troy James that the heat pumps cover more of the building than the recently added smoke detection covers. I called the designer and informed them that modifications will need to be made again to provide accurate smoke detection coverage for the areas that heat pumps 1 - 3 serve. I called the inspector to inform them of the new information. The general contractor came by city hall to inform us that their interpretation of the IMC allowed open area detection in the room where the heat pump air intake was located. Troy and I met with them to inform them that the exception of using the room as an open plenum to minimize detection requirements was not being met, since the room was occupiable This exception is only allowed in an unoccupiable room. I informed them that each heat pump would require an approved method of return air detection. This would include individual duct smoke detectors with sample tubes or individual detectors at the intake of each heat pump. If individual detectors are used, they must be rated for the feet per minute of airflow to be experienced at each location and that in the plan modification that is required, this information will be required. I called the designeer to inform them of the same information.

Mary Froemke called requesting requirements on duct detector information for resubmittal. I informed her that we could accept as built record drawings for documentation of the detectors located at heat pumps above meeting room 112 and that we will require documentation that indicates the intake air flow for each heat pump (1-3). According to the product data for the detectors being used, they are rated for an air flow velocity of 0 - 400 feet per minute. The intake for the heat pumps cannot exceed this amount. If they do, traditional duct smoke detectors will be required.

Informed by Troy James of mechanical inspections that there may be some air handlers that exceed the minimal requirement for duct smoke detectors. I called the vendor Patrick Gill of EEG (###-####) and left a message for him to call me for further discussion.
