Prior to application, Earl Lasater emailed me with design questions. He indicated that the building has full coverage smoke detection. Considering this, he wanted to know if duct smoke detection would be required, since this was an HVAC upgrade project. I informed him that 2013 NFPA 72 17.7.5.1 says fan control allows full coverage smoke detection to be an option to associated duct detectors so they will not be required. Subsequently, I discussed this with Troy James. He informed me that duct detectors will be required, based on a building department agreement to substitute them for normally required fire smoke dampers.
