Ken emailed a request to allow heat detection in suite bathrooms to be allowed as an alternate to in duct smoke detectors for fire smoke dampers. I responded that they could not because of the smoke rating and because the fire rating already requires internal heat activation of the damper so it would be redundant.

Returned a call to Ken. He did not see the need for the page microphone at the annunciator. I quoted 2012 IFC 907.6.3.1 which states the zone indicator panel is to have associated controls. Ken asked if the fire alarm panel could be moved to the lobby and the remote annunciator removed. I told him this was acceptable. THis shall be noted on the approved drawing.

Ken emailed to indicate in duct detectors should not be required for the fire smoke dampers that enter into the suites since he has provided full coverage (IMC 607.3.3.2(5)). I informed him taht 1/2 of the dampers served only the bathrooms, which aren't covered by suite detection. Also, in some suites, detector spacing has been exceeded and also cannot be considered full coverage.

Ken left a voice message regarding my review comment request for more detail on the fire smoke dampers. I emailed a response to let him know that I reviewed the approved mechanical drawings and confirmed that smoke detection is required at all of the locations Ken has noted on his shop drawings.

Ken called to ask if standard high rise code would be applied to voice evacuation sequence. I discussed this with Time Woodard. He and I agreed that general evac would be adequate since voice evac was required as part of the aerial access and not based on occupant load. I emailed this info to Ken.

Ken called for clarification on high rise design requirements noted in the review comments. He said that the building does not meet the standard requirements of a high rise. I informed him that there is an alternate design document that was submitted by the architect with high rise provisions which was approved in September of 2015. I emailed him a copy for reference. The approved design alternate included IB construction, NFPA 13 sprinklers, roof access via both stairs, pressurized stairwells, voice evac system, enhanced emergency radio responder coverage, generator and fire pump.
