a-35s 48 " oc at center drag strut/draft stop1. (Fire blocks and draft stops) In combustible construction, fireblocking and draftstopping shall be installed to cut off all concealed draft openings (both vertical and horizontal) and shall form an effective barrier between floors, between a top story and a roof or attic space, and shall subdivide attic spaces, concealed roof spaces and floor-ceiling assemblies. The integrity of all fire blocks and draft stops shall be maintanined. (1997 UBC 708.1)
2. DRAFT STOPS - When there is usable space above and below the concealed space of a floor-ceiling assembly in a single-family dwelling, draft stops shall be installed so that the area of the concealed space does not exceed 1,000 square feet. Draftstopping shall divide the concealed space into approximately equal areas. (1997 UBC 708.3.1.1.1) Draftstopping materials shall not be less than 1/2-inch gypsum board, 3/8-inch wood structural panel or other approved materials adequately supported. Openings in the partitions shall be protected by self-closing doors with automatic latches constructed as required for the partitions. Ventilation of concealed roof spaces shall be maintained. (1997 UBC 708.3.1.3)
